What is Homeopathy?
Homeopathy is an all-natural, gentle, safe and effective medicine. The remedies are very dilute solutions made from plants, minerals or animal products. It is a holistic medicine, meaning it takes all aspect of the person into account. This differs from most conventional medicine which focuses solely on a disease or a condition.
At Terrain Integrative Medicine, we practice classical homeopathy. This means you will get a single remedy, at the lowest effect dose, that matches your whole person. Since homeopathy by nature is a holistic medicine, when given it affects the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health of the person. This means homeopathy is great for physical, mental, emotional and spiritual conditions. Examples of conditions that homeopathy can be useful in treating include:
- Chronic pain
- Nerve pain
- Memory issues
- Attention issues
This is by no means an exhaustive list, but gives a good snapshot of some common conditions that it can be useful for.
How Homeopathy Works
The exact mechanism of how homeopathy works is still unknown. What is known, is each person has an internal vital force. The vital force is like a spinning top. Sometimes this top can slow and begin to wobble. Giving a homeopathic remedy strikes the vital force in way that causes it begin spinning again in the correct manner. To put it differently, homeopathy stimulates the vital force and the body's innate healing. This is why the whole person will improve from receiving the correct remedy rather than just the symptoms of a disease or condition.
Homeopathy has been around since the 1700's and was founded by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann. Hahnemann believed that symptoms should not necessarily be seen as something that need to cured, but rather as attempts of your body to heal itself. Homeopathy is based on the principle of "like-cures-like". Hahnemann observed that a substance that causes a certain set of symptoms in a healthy individual, would cure an ill individual with those same set of symptoms. Therefore, doctors can use the patients presenting symptoms to match them with a homeopathic remedy.
What to Expect from your Homeopathy Appointment
Your first appointment will be 75 minutes, while a follow up visit will be 45 minutes. In your first appointment your doctor will ask you questions about your chief concern, but they will also do a head-to-toe review of any other symptoms you may be experiencing. They may also ask about things like your relationships, work life, stress levels and childhood. You will also be asked about things like dreams, food cravings and aversions, preferred weather and preferred sleep position. The goal of the doctor is to fully understand you, what makes you unique and what makes you, you.
